A team from Sembcorp Bournemouth Water (SBW) took national honours when they won the men’s category of the 2011 Institute of Water Drilling and Tapping contest.
Peter Haslock and Danny Hunt will now represent the UK at the American Water Works Association exhibition at Dallas, Texas, in June 2012. The competition, which is open to water companies and their contractors across the UK, involves contestants drilling and tapping a 150mm diameter ductile iron main under pressure and connecting a service tap.
Fourteen teams took part this year with SBW crowned as winners in the men’s category, completing in a time of two minutes and 32 seconds with no penalties for leaks or any infringements. It is the fourth time SBW has won the contest which started more than 20 years ago. SBW’s Barrie Light, who coached the successful men’s team, is also the competition’s championship organiser. This year’s competition was held at the National Exhibition Centre (NEC) in Birmingham as part of Sustainabilitylive, the annual national IWEX exhibition and conference.
Roger Harrington, SBW’s Managing Director, said: “This is a stylised version of something we do many times every day in the streets.
“It is great to have this healthy competition between the people doing this on behalf of numerous water companies and their contractors.
“Our guys put in a huge amount of training in their own time for this and professional pride is a big driver for winning. We are pleased to support it and I thank our team for this success.”
