Sembcorp sponsored the Outstanding Contribution category at the recent NEPIC AnnualAwards Dinner.
Dr Douglas Annan handed over the £2,000 prize to Martin Inskip, Senior Director of Operations at MSD Pharmaceuticals at Cramlington in Northumberland.
Just five years ago the Northumberland tablet manufacturing site, with around 400 employees, was looking at an uncertain future as it faced up to tough competition from rivals, including other manufacturers within the parent Merck Group.
Survival depended on maintaining a reliable, compliant supply of tablets to customers at a lower cost and employees were galvanised when Mr Inskip’s threw down the gauntlet with a challenging vision to produce tablets at £4 per thousand.
The skills and commitment of the workforce in keeping a razor sharp focus on costs and reliability paid off with the North east factory winning out against Far East competition and Cramlington being awarded the status of main global producer for a key diabetes treatment drug, as well as 12 other products for existing and emerging markets.
The money will now go to the Dales School in Blyth, Northumberland which helps children of primary school age with special needs including Autism, Attention Deficit Hyperactive Distorder (ADHD) emotional and social difficulties and a range of other complex needs including Downs Syndrome, Cerebral Palsy and Epilepsy.
